Endometriosis Symptoms

The most common symptom is pelvic pain at the time of the menstrual period. The degree of pain can vary with some women having severe debilitating pain and others experiencing only mild pain. Other symptoms can also occur:

• Pain at the time of intercourse (known as deep dyspareunia)
• Pain during ovulation
• Unspecific lower abdominal pain (often chronic)
• Heavy, prolonged or irregular bleeding
• Spotting before or after periods
• Bleeding at the time of sexual intercourse (known as postcoital bleeding)
• Fatigue and lethargy
• Difficulty getting pregnant (subfertility)

If the patches are in other parts of the body there could be rectal bleeding (if affecting the bowel), blood in the urine (if affecting the bladder), or even coughing up blood (if sited in the lungs).
The severity of the symptoms bears no relationship to the extent of the condition, and it is advisable for all women experiencing any of the above mentioned symptoms to be further investigated in a dedicated clinical service.
